Narrated by Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn Maymun al-Raqqi:
He said, Muhammad (that is, Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Firyabi) narrated to us, who said:
Sufyan narrated to us, from ‘Asim ibn Kulayb, from his father, from Wa’il ibn Hujr — that he saw the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) sitting in prayer, spreading out his left leg and placing his forearms upon his thighs, and he pointed with his index finger, supplicating with it.
(Sunan al-Nasa’i, Hadith 1265)
The Supplication (Tashahhud):
Narrated by Abu Nu‘aym, who said:
Al-A‘mash narrated to us, from Shaqiq ibn Salamah, who said:
‘Abdullah (ibn Mas‘ud) said:
When we prayed behind the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace), we used to say: “Peace be upon Jibril and Mika’il, peace be upon so-and-so and so-and-so.” Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace) turned toward us and said:
“Indeed, Allah is As-Salam (the Source of Peace).
So when one of you prays, let him say:
‘At-tahiyyātu lillāh, was-salawātu wat-tayyibāt,
as-salāmu ‘alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh,
as-salāmu ‘alaynā wa ‘alā ‘ibādillāhis-sālihīn,
ash-hadu an lā ilāha illallāh, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasūluh.’
For indeed, when you say this, it reaches every righteous servant of Allah in the heavens and on earth. Then say:
‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.’”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 831)
Meaning:
All greetings, prayers, and pure words belong to Allah.
Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah.
I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.
